During your apprenticeship

Where do you work as a Textile Production Mechanic?
You will work in the knitting department at trigema, become involved in all processes from the beginning of your apprenticeship and be given defined areas of responsibility. Throughout the different stages of your apprenticeship and individual work processes, our experienced trainers will provide you with active support.
What do you do as a Textile Production Mechanic?
Your tasks include operating, setting up and maintaining our knitting machines and their yarn creels for the production of our high-quality products.

Your activities include adjusting yarn feed, yarn tension, take-down and fabric size, replacing broken needles, repairing yarn breaks and changing gears.

You will get to know the machines in detail and be responsible for monitoring, maintaining and repairing the knitting machines as well as checking production processes and carrying out quality assurance measures.

For the regular production of fabric rolls, a set of three machines is put into operation. One of your tasks, for example, is to connect the yarn to the corresponding creel.
How does the apprenticeship work?
In your first year, you will be introduced to the different yarns and knitting machines, with a focus on textile production. You will also learn the basics of the different knitting machines, such as which yarn quality is processed on which machine and what the individual machine components are called.

In the second year, this basic knowledge is developed further. The focus remains on production, but also includes setting up and repairing the machines. For example, you will learn how to insert needles correctly and how to adjust yarn feed and take-down tension.

In the third year, the focus increasingly shifts to mechanical processes. You can now demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have acquired in practice. For example, you may be assessed on whether you can change the yarn quality currently being processed on a knitting machine independently and at an appropriate pace. You will also learn more complex processes, such as adjusting yarn guides with a dial gauge or setting the distance between needle channels.
Where is the vocational school and how often do you attend?
The vocational school for the academic part of the Textile Production Mechanic apprenticeship is the Philipp-Matthäus-Hahn School in Balingen. Lessons take place in blocks throughout the apprenticeship, meaning that after two months in the company you will spend one month at school.
Which subjects are important for a Textile Production Mechanic?
In addition to general subjects such as German, English and social studies, vocational subjects are also taught.

In mathematics, for example, you learn how to calculate fibre material costs, material quantities, commercial weights and mixing ratios. In physics, you learn how to read block diagrams and circuit diagrams. Technical classes cover topics including the maintenance, care, repair and servicing of production machinery.
How does the final examination work?
At the end of your apprenticeship, the theoretical part of the final examination covers the material taught in all school subjects.

The practical part takes place in the company in the form of an assignment for which you prepare documentation.

For this assignment, you receive a fabric sample that you must produce in a specified quantity and quality. First, you decide which machine you will use to produce the fabric.

The main part of the examination involves converting the machine accordingly and preparing it for fabric production. You must take all relevant factors into account, such as staff availability.

You prepare documentation describing the entire process and how you completed the individual steps. This documentation is submitted to the IHK.

Based on this documentation, you will be asked questions during the oral IHK examination about the assignment itself and your professional practice in general.

After your apprenticeship

What career and further training opportunities do you have at trigema after your apprenticeship?
In addition to working directly as a Textile Production Mechanic after your apprenticeship, you can pursue further training as a technician or master craftsman. There are also various other development opportunities available to you at trigema.

For example, you can obtain a trainer qualification or work as a machine operator or quality inspector. Once you have demonstrated your skills during your first few years, you may also have opportunities to become a department manager, shift manager or assistant to the production management, up to a position as production manager.
